Science & Light

Why Spectrum Changes Everything

The light spectrum and its dynamics directly influence behaviour, circadian rhythms, colour vision and the overall health of animals. Every species has unique photobiological requirements that generic lighting cannot meet.

Reptiles & Tortoises

UV-B radiation (280-315 nm) is essential for vitamin D3 synthesis, which is critical for bone metabolism and calcium absorption.

UV-B 280-315 nm Vitamin D3

Birds

Tetrachromatic vision with UV-A perception. Critical flicker fusion frequency (CFF) of 80 to 145 Hz — far beyond the human 55-70 Hz range. Flicker is a major stressor.

CFF 80-145 Hz UV-A

Nocturnal Mammals

Red light >620 nm to avoid disrupting the circadian cycle. Strict luminous intensity control to preserve natural nocturnal activity patterns.

Red >620 nm Preserved cycle

Aquatic Species

Zooxanthellae-bearing corals require a blue/violet spectrum (400-490 nm) with a PAR of 150 to 500 μmol/m²/s for optimal photosynthesis.

Blue 400-490 nm PAR 150-500

Flicker-Free: a Biological Necessity

LEDs must operate above 100 Hz, or even on DC power, for the most sensitive species. Birds, with a CFF of up to 145 Hz, perceive 50/60 Hz flicker as a permanent strobe, generating chronic stress and behavioural disruption.

CRI ≥95 for Visitors, Species-Adapted Spectrum for Wildlife

A high CRI ensures natural colour rendering for the visitor experience. However, the true priority remains the species-adapted spectrum and total absence of flicker — both indispensable to animal welfare in a captive environment.

Regulation

EAZA Standards & Animal Welfare

The European Association of Zoos and Aquaria (EAZA) standards require lighting conditions tailored to each species. Our solutions natively integrate these requirements into every lighting design.

Multi-parameter gradients

Light, temperature, UV and humidity gradients to recreate realistic micro-habitats within each enclosure.

Species-specific UV dosing

Precise UV-A and UV-B dosing adapted to the physiological needs of each taxon, with shaded refuge zones.

Backup systems

Redundancy and emergency generator provisions required. Our installations include backup circuits to maintain critical light cycles.

Heating & hygrometry integration

Coordinated control of lighting, heating and hygrometric regulation via DALI-2 and DMX512 protocols.

Applications

Solutions by Space

Every zoological environment has unique constraints. Our solutions are custom-designed to meet the specific requirements of each habitat.
